How to Dispose of Old Paint in Orlando, FL
Leftover paint is one of the most common household items people struggle to dispose of properly in Orlando. The rules differ for latex (water-based) paint and oil-based paint, and throwing paint cans in the regular trash or a dumpster isn't always straightforward. Here's exactly how to handle paint disposal in Orange County.
Latex Paint Disposal (Water-Based)
Latex paint is NOT considered hazardous waste and can be disposed of in regular trash once dried. To dry latex paint: remove the lid, add cat litter or sawdust to absorb the liquid, stir and let it sit until solid (24-48 hours in Florida sun), then place the open can with dried paint in your regular trash. Small amounts can be brushed onto cardboard and dried. Never pour latex paint down drains or into storm sewers.
Oil-Based Paint Disposal (Hazardous)
Oil-based paint, stains, varnishes, and paint thinners ARE hazardous waste and cannot go in regular trash or dumpsters. Orange County operates a free Household Hazardous Waste facility at 5901 Young Pine Road, Orlando, FL 32829. Open Monday-Saturday. Bring oil-based paints in original containers when possible. They also accept spray paint, paint strippers, and solvents.
Paint Recycling in Orlando
PaintCare, a paint stewardship program, has drop-off locations throughout Florida including in the Orlando area. They accept both latex and oil-based paint for recycling. Check paintcare.org for the nearest drop-off location. Habitat for Humanity ReStore also accepts unopened or gently used paint for resale.
Renovation Paint Debris and Dumpsters
While liquid paint requires special handling, dried paint on demolition materials (painted drywall, trim, doors, etc.) goes right in a dumpster. During home renovations in Orlando, all painted building materials are accepted in our roll-off containers as standard construction debris. The paint disposal rules apply only to liquid paint in cans. If you have large amounts to dispose of, renting a dumpster is the easiest and most cost-effective option.
